Why Compostable Packaging Actually Matters (And What It Means for Your Beauty Routine)
If you've been paying attention to the beauty world lately, you've probably noticed a shift. More brands are talking about sustainability, eco-friendly credentials, and plastic-free packaging. But what does it all actually mean, and how do you know when a brand is genuinely walking the talk?
At Slo Naturals, we've been committed to compostable, paper-based packaging since day one. Here's why we made that choice, and why we think it matters more than ever.
The Problem With Conventional Beauty Packaging
The global beauty industry produces an estimated 120 billion units of packaging every year. The vast majority of that is plastic, and most of it ends up in landfill, or worse, our oceans.
Think about how many plastic deodorant sticks, shampoo bottles, moisturiser tubs, and lip balm tubes you've gone through in your lifetime. Now multiply that by everyone you know. The numbers are staggering. Plastic takes hundreds of years to break down, and even then it never fully disappears, it simply breaks into smaller and smaller microplastic particles that find their way into our waterways, our food chains, and ultimately, our bodies.
Conventional beauty packaging is one of the most significant contributors to single-use plastic waste. And for an industry that's supposed to be about caring for people, that's a pretty uncomfortable truth.
What Is Compostable Packaging?
Compostable packaging is made from natural materials, in our case, FSC-certified cardboard and paper, that break down completely in a home compost environment, leaving behind nothing harmful. No microplastics. No toxic residue. Just natural material returning to the earth.
This is different from "biodegradable" packaging, which is a broader and less regulated term. Biodegradable materials do break down eventually, but the timeline can be decades, and the process sometimes releases harmful gases or leaves behind chemical residues. True compostable packaging, verified to recognised standards, breaks down within months under the right conditions.
Our packaging is 98.7% FSC-certified compostable cardboard with a 1.3% cornstarch film, and the ink used to print our labels is 100% plant-based. When you're done with your Slo deodorant or moisturiser, you can pop the tube straight into your home compost bin or your paper recycling (I recommend cutting it up for faster compostability - yes I've made that word up) That's it. Zero guilt.
Why We Chose Paper-Based Packaging From the Start
When Vanessa and I founded Slo Naturals in 2016, the mission was clear from the beginning: create natural beauty products that leave no trace — in your body or on the earth.
Choosing compostable packaging wasn't just a marketing decision. It was the only option that made sense given what we stand for. We weren't willing to create products full of clean, organic, plant-based ingredients and then wrap them in plastic. That felt like a contradiction we couldn't live with.
Paper-based packaging also has a number of practical benefits that are easy to overlook:
It's lighter. Our solid deodorant formula combined with lightweight cardboard packaging means our products weigh significantly less than conventional alternatives. Less weight means less fuel to freight, which means a lower carbon footprint from production to your doorstep.
It lasts longer. Because our products are solid and concentrated, they last 2-3 times longer than many conventional alternatives. Fewer products bought over time means less packaging waste overall.
It's genuinely beautiful. We believe sustainable products shouldn't look like a compromise. Our paper tubes are elegant, travel-friendly, and easy to use - push-up style, just like a conventional deodorant stick, but without the plastic.
The Rise of Conscious Beauty Consumers
You're not alone in caring about this. Consumer demand for sustainable, plastic-free beauty has grown dramatically in recent years, and in 2026 it's no longer a niche preference, it's a mainstream expectation.
More and more people are asking questions that would have seemed unusual just a few years ago: What's in this product? Where was it made? How do I dispose of the packaging? Is this brand telling the truth about its sustainability credentials?
These are exactly the right questions to ask. Greenwashing, where brands make vague or misleading sustainability claims without the substance to back them up, is rife in the beauty industry. Third-party certifications like PETA, FSC, and GMP manufacturing standards exist precisely to help consumers cut through the noise and identify brands that are genuinely accountable.
At Slo Naturals, we welcome scrutiny. Our certifications, ingredient lists, and manufacturing practices are all transparent and verifiable because we have nothing to hide.
Small Swaps, Real Impact
We know that one person switching to compostable beauty packaging won't solve the world's plastic problem overnight. But we also believe that collective action starts with individual choices, and that the brands we support with our spending send a powerful signal to the industry.
Every Slo Naturals tube you choose instead of a plastic alternative is one less piece of plastic in the system. And when you finish it and pop it in your compost, it becomes part of something rather than a problem for future generations to inherit.
That feels pretty good to us. We hope it does to you too. 🌿
Our Commitment Going Forward
We're always looking for ways to do better. That means continuing to push the boundaries of what's possible with natural formulations, exploring even more sustainable ingredient sourcing, and making sure our packaging evolves with the best available technology and standards.
Being a sustainable business isn't a destination, it's a practice. And it's one we're committed to for the long haul.
